Kidney Transplantation

Details about Kidney Transplantation.

The Institute of Kidney Diseases (IKD) in Peshawar stands as a pioneering institution in the field of kidney transplant technology within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), leading the way in public-sector renal care. Established in 2008, our kidney transplant program was developed in response to the urgent needs of patients across the region, particularly those unable to afford life-saving treatments. Since then, IKD has continued to provide critical services to help meet the growing demand for renal transplants in the community.

In Pakistan, an estimated 25,000 individuals progress to end-stage renal failure every year. Unfortunately, only around 10% of these patients have access to dialysis, and an even smaller portion—just 2.3%—are fortunate enough to receive a kidney transplant. These figures underscore the importance of IKD's transplant services, which have offered life-changing opportunities for patients in KP and beyond.

Milestones and Achievements

  1. First Government Sector Transplant Institution in KP
IKD is proud to be the first-ever public-sector institution in KP to perform kidney transplants, marking a major advancement in accessible renal care since the program’s launch in 2008.

  2. Nearly 200 Successful Kidney Transplants
To date, IKD has successfully conducted more than 196 kidney transplants, transforming lives and providing a new chance at health for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease.

  3. Comprehensive Financial Support for Patients
With the support of the KP Government, IKD assists transplant patients with both pre-operative and post-operative expenses. This financial support has been crucial in making transplant services affordable and accessible to all eligible patients.

  4. Free Post-Operative Medications
In 2017-2018, IKD provided free post-transplant medications to more than 1,400 transplant patients. These medications are essential for recovery and to prevent transplant rejection, and IKD remains committed to ensuring patients receive ongoing care and support.

By pioneering transplant technology and comprehensive renal care services, the Institute of Kidney Diseases continues to be a beacon of hope for kidney patients in KP, dedicated to improving health outcomes and enhancing quality of life.
